Hobo Symbols

Not so long ago, in a far different time, a new language of hope, helping and trust developed spontaneously all across the U.S. and other countries of the world. Hobos drew the symbols of this new language with chalk on sidewalks, or carved them into trees, walls or doors to help their fellow travelers find their way during the hard times of the depression.

While these crude symbols seem today to have an almost humorous appearance, they served a deadly serious purpose. They helped travelers to find work, food, and safe shelter in a difficult, often dangerous world.

The symbols were usually used one at a time. Each of the symbols above represents a particular direction or warning, such as "Beware of dangerous dog", "A kind lady lives here", "People here will give you food for work", "this is a safe place to camp", and so forth.

In these very different and impersonal times, we think the secret language of the hobo should be preserved.

The meaning of each symbol is described in the manual provided with the font. The symbols are easy to use - just install as a type font, use the included fully illustrated manual to see which symbol you wish to use and just press the appropriate key on your keyboard. Simply change the type size to change the size of the image - Note: images can be made very large and printed out to make your own tree or door signs.
